Medicinal Uses of Neem – Azadirachta indica

The neem tree is one of the most widely found medicinal plants in Ghana, growing abundantly across the country. Originally native to India and Southeast Asia, neem was introduced to Ghana through trade and migration. The local climate and soil conditions proved so favorable that the tree quickly became invasive, spreading rapidly across various regions. This natural expansion was aided by fruit bats, which helped disperse the seeds after feeding on the fruit.

Beyond its medicinal qualities, many Ghanaians value the neem tree for its dense shade. Over time, it also became an important source of firewood—especially in the heavily populated areas of Accra, where it now serves as a major contributor to household fuel.
